JENNIFER

…I hated the feel of his hands on my skin—greedy, devouring, rough. He rubbed my nipple and kneaded my breast like a baker making bread. It hurt, but I didn’t let on. It was my duty as a wife.

After three years of marriage, he no longer tried to kiss me. Instead, he kept his lips pressed against the nape of my neck, his hot breath caressing my skin, stinking of venom and rot.

The moaning with the nudge on my shoulder was his way of letting me know it was time. He shoved me backward, his knee between my legs, hands continuing to massage my delicate flesh.

On the bedstead, I submitted as his wife, spreading my legs without words or movements, pretending to be a tree. I didn’t enjoy it. I wouldn’t lie about it, but it would end soon with me no more than sore. I bore my duty one more time, as a God-fearing woman and his wife…
